USA and Mexico give up organizing the 2027 Women’s World Cup

The United States Soccer Federation and its Mexican counterpart abandoned their joint bid for 2027 and will seek to host the Women’s World Cup in 2031.

A few weeks before the venue is decided, the United States and Mexico withdrew their joint candidacy to organize the Women’s World Cup 2027, in a decision that left Brazil’s candidacy and a joint plan between Germany-Netherlands-Belgium as alternatives.

The two North American countries announced that their intention is to present another candidacy to host this FIFA event in 2031. The decision of the United States and Mexico, partners with Canada in the organization of the 2026 men’s World Cup, comes shortly before that FIFA votes on the award of the next Women’s World Cup at its congress in Bangkok (Thailand) on May 17.

The other two proposals presented are that of Brazil and another joint one between Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. The designation of the venue for the tenth Women’s World Cup will be decided for the first time by open voting at the Bangkok congress, FIFA said on Monday.

In a joint statement, US Soccer and the Mexican Soccer Federation noted that postponing their bid from 2027 to 2031 will allow them to dedicate more time to the project, to absorb the learnings from the 2026 Men’s World Cup and support the host cities.

United States, overloaded with events

“Hosting a World Cup is a huge undertaking, and having more time to prepare will allow us to maximize its impact around the world,” said US Soccer President Cindy Parlow Cone. Had the withdrawn proposal been successful, the 2027 World Cup would have been added to an extremely busy sports calendar in the coming years in the United States.

In addition to the 2026 World Cup, the North American giant will also host this year’s Copa América, the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. The United States has hosted two editions of the Women’s World Cup (1999 and 2003), of which he is the top winner with four titles.

In their statement, the federations of the United States and Mexico committed that their new project will require, for the first time, “the same investment” as a men’s World Cup. This “will eliminate investment disparities to fully maximize the commercial potential of the women’s tournament,” said Cindy Parlow Cone. The 2023 Women’s World Cup was held in Australia and New Zealand, with Spain’s first victory, and the last time they stayed in North America was in Canada in 2015.
