Francisco Cerúndolo was eliminated from Masters 1000 of Madrid by losing 6-1, 3-6 and 6-3 against the American Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals of the competition, in almost two hours of play played at the Manolo Santana stadium.
Cerúndolo, who had had a weak start to the season, seems to have reached his best level in Madrid, where he went on a good streak of wins to get into the top eight.
In his debut he beat the Hungarian Fábián Marozsán, in the third round the American Tommy Paul (15th) and yesterday he achieved one of the best victories of his career by defeating the German Alexander Zverev (world number 5).
Fritz, for his part, reached the final in Munich last week and in Madrid he beat some very tough rivals: first he beat the Italian-Argentine Luciano Darderi, then the Argentine Sebastian Baez (19th) and yesterday the difficult Pole Hubert Hurkacz (8th).
The American dominated the match with a solid game, taking advantage of the Argentine’s mistakes. Despite Cerúndolo’s attempts to impose his powerful forehand, Fritz maintained his consistency and won the match with class.
Although Cerúndolo showed flashes of his ability in the second set, Fritz maintained control, securing his place in the semifinals, where he will face Russian Andrey Rublev.
In other quarterfinal matches, Jannik Sinner (2nd) retired against Felix Auger-Aliassime (35th) due to a hip injury. Meanwhile, Daniil Medvedev (4th) will face Jiri Lehecka (31st), who eliminated Nadal.
Finally, the current champion, Carlos Alcaraz (3rd), fell to Andrey Rublev (6th) in an exciting duel 4-6, 6-3 and 6-2.
