Equestrian sport: “Not a flash in the pan”: Jüngel wins German jumping derby

Marvin Jüngel’s success at the Spring Derby 2023 was surprising. A year later, the 22-year-old proves that it was no coincidence.

Marvin Jüngel repeated his surprise victory at the German jumping derby from last year. The 22-year-old also secured the famous Blue Ribbon at the 93rd edition in Hamburg.

In the jump-off of the classic, which was worth 120,000 euros, the rider from Kamenz in Saxony on Balou’s Heiress did not have to drop in front of more than 25,000 enthusiastic spectators and only crossed the finish line with two time penalty points. “Of course it’s indescribable,” said Jüngel on ZDF. “It was important to us to show that this wasn’t a flash in the pan.”

Katharina Haas wins the dressage derby

In the play-off, the two penalty points were enough to stop Frederic Tillmann. The 45-year-old from Grevenbroich – handicapped by four broken ribs – was faster than Jüngel in the jump-off course on Comanche, but had a drop at the last obstacle and, as in 2022, came second.

The two pairs were the only starters who made no mistakes on the most difficult course in the world. These were the zero rounds 162 and 163 in the 104-year history of the traditional tournament in Klein Flottbek. The Frenchman Emeric George came third on Dune du Ru, who had a drop in the round and achieved the best time of 150.20 seconds.

In the morning, the Austrian Katharina Haas won the 64th dressage derby. In the Grand Prix with horse changes, in addition to her horse Let it be, she also had to ride with the horses of her competitors Maik Kohlschmidt and Sarah Waldsperger and collected the most percentage points overall.
