Alexander Zverev is in the quarterfinals of the Tennis Masters in Rome. The Olympic champion won his round of 16 game against the Portuguese Nuno Borges 6:2 and 7:5. In the next round, the 27-year-old from Hamburg will now face Taylor Fritz from the USA, who defeated the higher ranked Grigor Dimitrov from Bulgaria 6:2, 6:7 (11:13) and 6:1.
Zverev wants to use the clay court tournament in Rome to get in top shape for the French Open in Paris in around two weeks. It has been an unsatisfactory season on clay for him so far. Germany’s top player failed in the round of 16 at the Masters tournaments in Monte Carlo and Madrid, and in the quarter-finals at the home event in Munich. In Rome, Zverev is ranked third and hopes to reach his first individual final this year.
