Football: “Very self-confident”: DFB is betting on winning the Women’s World Cup

The German Football Association wants to host a women’s World Cup for the first time since 2011. At the FIFA Congress, votes are sought until the last minute.

The German Football Association is confidently entering the crucial phase before the 2027 Women’s World Cup is awarded. The DFB is applying to host it together with Belgium and the Netherlands.

“I think it will be a very exciting decision. We are very self-confident, we believe that we have submitted an excellent application and will do everything until the last moment to ensure that it is successful,” said DFB President Bernd Neuendorf the FIFA Congress in Bangkok, where the tournament is awarded.

The trio’s only opponent is Brazil. The USA and Mexico recently withdrew their joint application. The last time Germany hosted the Women’s World Cup was in 2011. He will “have a lot of discussions” in Bangkok, said Neuendorf, who sits on the council of the world association.

Overall grade “slightly” below that of Brazil

“We will throw everything into it so that we are ahead at the end of the day.” For the first time, a Women’s World Cup will be awarded by Congress and therefore by all voting members of FIFA’s 211 member associations. Most recently, the three-way application received a slightly worse result than Brazil in a FIFA evaluation report.

Both applications therefore meet all minimum requirements. However, there would be “a number of legal risks” in the European application. The state governments did not fully guarantee the legal enforceability of submitted state support documents, it said.

Even if the overall grade is “slightly” lower than Brazil’s, it will be seen as confirmation of the joint application, a spokesman for the Federal Ministry of the Interior told dpa. The three-party candidacy received an excellent rating for, among other things, the short distances and sustainability. “The strengths of the application are reflected in the evaluation report, so that the associations can look forward to the election at the FIFA Congress in Bangkok with confidence and confidence,” said the BMI spokesman.
