The Olympics are not just the conclusion of basketball coach Gordon Herbert’s three-year plan. It is also his personal farewell event. The national coach surprisingly leaves the selection early.
World champion coach Gordon Herbert is leaving the German basketball players early after the Olympic Games in Paris. The German Basketball Federation (DBB) announced this on Wednesday. The “Bild” newspaper initially reported that the 65-year-old Canadian had already informed the team about this step on Tuesday. Herbert actually still had a contract until after the European Championships next year. According to DBB information, this will be dissolved on August 31st.
“We have great understanding that Gordie wants to devote himself to another task after the Olympic Games and we are not putting any obstacles in his way,” association president Ingo Weiss was quoted as saying. “Anyone who knows Gordie knows that he will throw himself into preparing for the Olympic Games with full commitment and passion. It would be great if our time together could end with another exclamation mark.”
Is Gordon Herbert going to Rostock after the “ultimate life moment”?
Herbert took over the national team in the summer of 2021 and subsequently led it to European Championship bronze and the first World Cup title in the association’s history. His announced three-year plan ends after the 2022 home European Championships in Cologne and Berlin and the 2023 World Cup in Asia with the Olympics in France. “The trip was the ultimate life moment for me,” said Herbert, thanking the players and the association for “an incredible experience and an honor.”
According to information from “Bild”, a commitment to the Rostock Seawolves in the Bundesliga could now follow. The club is said to be showing great interest and has just parted ways with previous coach Christian Held this week.
