The Boston Celtics are in the Eastern Conference Finals – for the third year in a row. But the interim step doesn’t count for much for the record champions. The Mavericks gain an advantage.
The Boston Celtics are the first team in the NBA to reach the Conference Finals. The best team in the main round achieved the necessary fourth win in the series by beating the Cleveland Cavaliers 113:98 and is now in the finals of the Eastern Conference for the third time in a row.
However, Boston did not win the NBA championship during this period. The Celtics therefore still have 17 titles – only the Los Angeles Lakers have as many. Opponents in the Conference Finals will be either the New York Knicks or the Indiana Pacers. In their duel, the Knicks lead with the German Isaiah Hartenstein with 3:2 victories.
The Celtics had to nibble against the Cavaliers for a long time and tested the nerves of the fans in the TD Garden. “We didn’t expect to win the game in the first or second quarter. It takes as long as it takes,” said Jayson Tatum, the Celtics’ best scorer with 25 points, on US television after the game. Getting into the conference finals is not a great success: “I’ve been here many times. That’s not the goal.” Al Horford had an outstanding game and finished with 22 points and 15 rebounds. The best thrower for the Cavaliers was Evan Mobley with 33 points.
Dallas Mavericks defeat Oklahoma City
In Oklahoma City, the Dallas Mavericks won 104:92 and took a 3-2 lead after wins in the competitive Western Conference series. Two days after the lost game in Dallas, the Mavericks around stars Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving were always in control of the situation. Würzburg’s Maxi Kleber was still missing due to his shoulder injury.
“It’s only 3-2, we have to finish it,” Doncic said. The Slovenian recorded a triple double of 31 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists. Irving had another subpar night with twelve points and four assists. For the Oklahoma City Thunder, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was the best man with 30 points. The decision can now be made in game six on the German night on Sunday in Dallas.
