For the first time in his career, Xander Schauffele wins a major – and with a record result. The PGA Championship was exciting until the last shot on the last hole.
At the award ceremony, Xander Schauffele noticed for the first time how difficult the trophy is for winning the PGA Championship. The 30-year-old golf professional had earned the feeling through his debut triumph at a major – with a record result at that. The American finally played a round of 65 and finished the tournament with 263 strokes. According to the US media, the 21 strokes under par is a record at majors. He secured the victory with a birdie on the final hole – Schauffele defeated Bryson DeChambeau by one stroke.
“I really didn’t want to go into a playoff against Bryson, we probably would have played 18 holes. I said to myself, this is my chance,” Schauffele said on US television. “I was actually emotional. It’s been a while since I won anything. It was really hard to concentrate today. Everything is good now.” He reported at the award ceremony that he had already been able to call his father. “But I had to hang up relatively quickly because he made me cry.” The Norwegian Viktor Hovland came third with 18 strokes under par.
World number one Scottie Scheffler finished the competition at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville after turbulent days and a few hours in police custody with 13 strokes under par in tied eighth place. The two-time Masters winner is said to have failed to follow the instructions of police investigating a fatal traffic accident involving a pedestrian on Friday morning. Scheffler had tried to avoid a traffic jam with his car. He is said to have slightly injured a police officer’s wrist. The world number one was then taken to a police station in handcuffs and processed for identification.
Martin Kaymer had the worst of his four rounds on the final day and slipped from 38th place to tied for 73rd place after 76 strokes. The second German in the field, Stephan Jäger, came in 76th place with five strokes over par.
