A cockpit could soon become vacant at the Williams Formula 1 team. Logan Sargeant is in danger of being fired. Mick Schumacher is also being mentioned as a possible successor.
The threatened expulsion of US driver Logan Sargeant (23) from the Formula 1 team Williams could give Mick Schumacher (25) the chance to make a comeback.
The team boss of the traditional English racing team, James Vowles, admitted on the sidelines of the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix in Imola that Sargeant was “on the brink”. Vowles told the English TV channel Sky that he had a “direct conversation” with him. “He has to do more. This is a meritocracy.”
But Vowles wants to help Sargeant, who is still without points this season. “I want him to be successful. But in the meantime we’re talking to a few other riders because we need to clarify our pairing for ’25, ’26 and ’27,” said the Englishman.
“It would be a great opportunity for Mick”
Sargeant is contesting his second Formula 1 season; he only scored a point last year at the Grand Prix in Austin. His teammate Alex Albon recently signed a multi-year contract.
Should Williams part ways with Sargeant prematurely, Mick Schumacher’s return would also be conceivable. “He would be available immediately and wants to show that he belongs here. It would be a great opportunity for Mick,” said Sky expert Timo Glock.
Schumacher lost his Haas cockpit to Nico Hülkenberg at the end of 2022 after two years. Since then he has been a Mercedes substitute driver. This season, the son of record world champion Michael Schumacher is also active in Alpine’s long-distance project. The connection between Mercedes and Williams is close, as the British source engines from the German carmaker. Vowles was also formerly chief strategist under Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff.
