There are increasing signs that Vincent Kompany will soon be driving FC Bayern’s footballers. His record so far: mediocre. So why him?
FC Bayern Munich’s search for a coach, which has been going on for months, may be nearing its end. The German football record champions are said to be close to signing Vincent Kompany, and the deal could be completed by the end of the week. This is reported by the English newspaper “The Guardian”.
Accordingly, discussions with the owner of Burnley FC, Alan Pace, are already well advanced. On Wednesday there were said to be discussions about the amount of the transfer fee for Kompany, who has been coaching the relegated team from the Premier League since Somme 2022. The name of the former Hamburger SV and Manchester City professional was first linked to FC Bayern at the beginning of the week.
In terms of sport, Kompany doesn’t have the best track record. Although the 38-year-old managed to secure promotion to the Premier League with Burnley, he was immediately relegated. With 24 points from 38 games, Burnley only finished second to last in what was supposed to be the best league in the world. In the end, eight points were missing to save the game.
However, Kompany received a lot of praise for the way Burnley played. The former defender began his coaching career at RSC Anderlecht. He led the struggling Belgian record champions to third place twice, then moved to Burnley after two years.
Nobody wants to be a coach at FC Bayern
For Bayern, the signing of the former Belgian international would mark the end of a long search that the public could follow in detail. After the announced separation from Thomas Tuchel at the end of the season, Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso, national coach Julian Nagelsmann and Austrian national coach Ralf Rangnick canceled. A commitment from ex-Frankfurt coach Oliver Glasner also did not materialize. Roger Schmidt from Benfica Lisbon also opted out, and efforts to keep Tuchel on the job had recently failed.
This would allow sporting director Max Eberl to close the most important construction site shortly after the end of the season, which saw Bayern finish without a title and only third in the Bundesliga. There would also be enough time to take Kompany’s ideas into account when looking for new signings.
