Manchester United won the FA Cup with a victory in the city duel against Manchester City. Coach Erik ten Hag’s team surprisingly won the English Cup final against their big rivals and renewed English football champions with a score of 2:1 (2:0).
Especially to the delight of ten Hag, the 54-year-old Dutchman let his joy out after the final whistle and celebrated with the team and the trophy in his hands.
United coach doesn’t know what will happen next
It is questionable, however, whether he will remain in office. Even before the final, reports had emerged that he would have to vacate the post. “I don’t know,” he said after the cup victory when asked about his future at Manchester United, according to the BBC.
“The only thing I do is prepare my team and develop them further.” When he came to Manchester United, he said it was chaotic. “Now we are better.” But they are not yet where they wanted to be. Ten Hag has been training the team since July 2022.
Club co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe initially did not comment on the coaching issue. A video published by the Daily Mail in its live ticker showed him ignoring the question in the catacombs of London’s Wembley Stadium.
After their quarter-final exit in the Champions League a few weeks ago, Manchester City, coached by Pep Guardiola, also lost the chance to win the double. For United, however, it was their first cup triumph since 2016 and their 13th overall.
Goal too late for Guardiola’s team
In a very strong first half, United took the lead in the 30th minute through Alejandro Garnacho. The 19-year-old Argentinian benefited from a misunderstanding between former Bundesliga professional Josko Gvardiol and German goalkeeper Stefan Ortega. The former RB Leipzig player Gvardiol headed the ball over Ortega as he rushed out of his goal – Garnacho was the beneficiary. Nine minutes later, Kobbie Mainoo increased the lead to 2-0.
After Jeremy Doku scored again (87th minute), things got exciting again. Seven minutes of extra time were added on, but ultimately United prevailed.
