Toni Kroos receives an emotional farewell from the fans at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid. The 34-year-old leaves as a “Leyenda” – but there is still an extremely important game with Real to come.
National player Toni Kroos received an emotional farewell from fans and teammates in his last league home game with Real Madrid.
Before kick-off, the professionals of the Spanish football champions lined up for the 34-year-old, who will end his extremely successful career after the European Championships in the summer. The Real stars wore Kroos’ number eight jersey. The fans in the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu displayed a huge banner with the inscription: “Gracias Leyenda” – Thank you, legend.
The match against Betis Sevilla at the end of the season, which was of no sporting significance for Real, ended 0-0. In addition to Kroos, who was substituted and celebrated a few minutes before the end, DFB team-mate Antonio Rüdiger was also in the starting eleven. Madrid still has an important game to look forward to: next Saturday in London, Real will play against Borussia Dortmund for the Champions League title.
Kroos has won the trophy five times so far, four times with Real and once with Bayern. The Primera División title this season was also his fourth championship in Spain. Because of the Champions League final, Kroos and Rüdiger will later travel to the national team of national coach Julian Nagelsmann to prepare for the European Championships at home. Kroos announced his decision to end his career on Tuesday.
