Toni Kroos thanked the thousands of Real Madrid fans after his last big celebration at the legendary Estadio Santiago Bernabéu. “I’ve always felt at home in these ten years, I couldn’t wish for more,” Kroos told the club’s own broadcaster after the 0-0 draw in the champions’ last game of the season against Betis Sevilla, where the result was irrelevant. The 34-year-old will end his career after the European Championship in the summer.
Kroos had already been celebrated before kick-off, and when he was substituted shortly before the end, he was greeted by his three children. “I was strong until I saw my children,” said the national player, who hugged the little ones, visibly moved. He could only thank everyone. Kroos will play with Real against Borussia Dortmund in London on June 1st for the Champions League title – if he wins, it will be his sixth title in the premier class.
“I think it was a great farewell for a legend,” said Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti. “He is a player who has done something extraordinary for this club. It is the farewell he deserves. Because of the final in the Champions League, Kroos and his teammate Antonio Rüdiger are traveling late to prepare the national team for the European Championships at home. The DFB selection of national coach Julian Nagelsmann is already meeting this Sunday for a training camp in Thuringia, which Kroos, Rüdiger and the two Dortmund players Niclas Füllkrug and Nico Schlotterbeck will miss.
