A new edition of Roland Garros was launched and is presented as one of the most even in recent decades, since no player arrives demonstrating clear dominance on the circuit.
The following is a review of those tennis players who have the best chance of lifting the “Musketeers Cup” on June 9.
The candidates to win Roland Garros 2024:
Novak Djokovic
The Serbian had his worst start to the season in several years and arrives in Paris without reaching a final in all of 2024.
But the defending champion and world No. 1 should never be considered dead. A specialist in getting into his rivals’ heads during matches, playing five sets against “Djoker” is true torture.
Carlos Alcaraz
The young wonder appears as the main threat to end, once and for all, Novak Djokovic’s reign in tennis.
He won a Wimbledon final against the Serbian, he already won a US Open, he became the youngest world No. 1 in history and has several Masters 1000 under his belt.
But in recent months he has had a worrying drop in his level (since Wimbledon 2023 he has only won one tournament) and his irregularity does not allow him to start as a candidate at Roland Garros.
In addition, he missed much of the clay tour due to discomfort in his right arm.
Jannik Sinner
The Italian, world number 2, had an impressive start to the season, winning practically everything he played during the first months.
He would be the great candidate at this Roland Garros if it weren’t for his hip problems, which prevented him from doing good preparation for the second Grand Slam of the season.
It is a mystery due to the lack of activity in recent weeks, but if he is at his best level he can repeat what he did in Australia in January, when he won his first Grand Slam title.
Alexander Zverev
Will Roland Garros finally be the tournament where the little prince becomes king? The German has some blows and a practically perfect technique, but his head is his great enemy in important moments.
He reaches the second Grand Slam of the year after lifting the trophy at the Rome Masters 1000 and displacing Daniil Medvedev from fourth position in the ranking, but he will not have an easy time in his debut against Nadal.
Casper Ruud
The Norwegian is tailor-made for clay and has already reached the final of Roland Garros in 2022 and 2023, but he was never able to stand against the best in the world in the decisive stages.
A clear example of this is that, until a few weeks ago, he had only won ATP 250 titles.
It will be a matter of time to see if the title in Barcelona changed his chip for big events.
Stefanos Tsitsipas
Another brick dust specialist. The three-time champion in Monte Carlo and finalist at Roland Garros in 2021 had a very irregular 2023 that caused him to fall out of the top 10 this year, but in recent weeks he raised his level a lot and appears as a threat to anyone who crosses his path .
Andrey Rublev
Maybe in less candidate. The Russian has a unique power in his strokes and this led him to win the Madrid Masters 1000.
But in the Grand Slam he has a serious blockage in the quarterfinals, where he has a record of 0-10.
The cards are drawn, Roland Garros is already underway and we will have to wait two weeks to see if any of these candidates win the title or there is finally a big surprise in the second Grand Slam of 2024.
