National team: After infection: Goalkeeper Neuer with the DFB team in Blankenhain

After a gastrointestinal infection, Bayern goalkeeper Neuer is joining the DFB team late. The 38-year-old can now make his comeback in the DFB goal in Thuringia.

Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has arrived at the national football team’s training camp after recovering from a gastrointestinal infection. The DFB announced this in Blankenhain in the evening. The 38-year-old Neuer had missed the start of the European Championship preparations in Thuringia because of “the minor infection,” as national coach Julian Nagelsmann classified the illness.

Nagelsmann is planning to use Neuer as tournament goalkeeper. The national coach said that his status as number one would not change. The illness was “nothing dramatic” for him. If Neuer can now start training again, he should be back in the DFB goal next Monday in the friendly against Ukraine in Nuremberg for the first time since the 2022 World Cup. Neuer suffered a complicated leg fracture after the tournament in Qatar a year and a half ago. He had to take a break for months afterwards.

International match comeback in March was cancelled due to injury

Neuer had to postpone his planned comeback in goal for the national team in March due to a muscle injury sustained in training. Marc-André ter Stegen from FC Barcelona was in goal for the victories against France (2-0) and the Netherlands (2-1). Before these international matches, however, Nagelsmann had decided on Neuer as the number one at the home tournament.
