BVB could become the first Bundesliga football club to be sponsored by an arms company. This is what consistent media reports suggest.
The arms company Rheinmetall is to become a sponsor of the Bundesliga football club Borussia Dortmund. This is what the “Handelsblatt” and “Kicker” newspapers both report. Neither the club nor the company commented on Tuesday when asked by the news agency DPA.
According to the “” report, a three-year partnership has been agreed that will bring BVB a single-digit million amount per year. The company’s logo will be visible on advertising boards as early as Wednesday during Dortmund’s preparations for the Champions League final. The jerseys will not be affected by the agreement. Borussia will face Real Madrid on Saturday at London’s Wembley Stadium.
BVB has apparently sought various opinions
The “” goes on to say that the club had sought opinions from politicians, business people and its own fan scene on the possible entry into the club, as to whether an arms company would fit in with BVB’s core values. The answer was positive, as protecting a democracy also requires a strong defense, the report says.
Rheinmetall is profiting from the Russian attack on Ukraine in February 2022. The share price of Germany’s largest arms manufacturer has increased roughly fivefold since then. The group is also receiving additional funds from the federal government. Rheinmetall estimates that it will receive around 30 billion step by step from a 100 billion euro special fund for the Bundeswehr – spread over a period of several years, which is usual for arms contracts.
