The first to play was Etcheverry from La Plata (28th seed), who has a large number of ranking points at stake as he defends the quarterfinals achieved last year.
In a tough debut, he was able to recover from a weak first set to beat local Arthur Cazaux, a young promise who already reached the round of 16 at the Australian Open this year, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 and 6-4 after 3 hours and 26 minutes of play.
The other Argentine who got into the second round was Mariano Navone (31st), who in his senior Grand Slam debut was able to defeat the Spanish Pablo Carreño Busta 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 and 6-0.
Meanwhile, the Argentine representatives who lost were Federico Coria (2-6, 6-1, 6-2 and 6-1 against the American Taylor Fritz, 12th seed), Roman Burruchaga (against the German Jan-Lennard Struff, 6-3, 6-2 and 6-1), Lourdes Carlé (against Belgian Elise Mertens, 25th seed, 6-3 and 7-6 [8]) and Nadia Podoroskaby a resounding 6-1 and 6-0 against the former Belarusian world number 1 Victoria Azarenka.
In an hour of match, the Belarusian had no mercy with the Rosario, who reached the semifinals of the French Grand Slam in 2020. In the next round, Azarenka will face the Russian Mirra Andreeva.
