Spain’s tennis star Carlos Alcaraz has struggled to reach the third round of the French Open as the first major tournament favorite. The 21-year-old beat Dutch qualifier Jesper de Jong 6:3, 6:4, 2:6, 6:2.
In the fight for a place in the round of 16, the two-time Grand Slam tournament winner will face the winner of the duel between US-American Sebastian Korda and Soonwoo Kwon from South Korea.
After his elbow injury, which kept him out for almost four weeks, Alcaraz played again with a white bandage on his right arm. The previous year’s semi-finalist had problems with the courageous play of de Jong, only number 176 in the world, especially in the third set. After 3 hours and 9 minutes, Alcaraz won the match thanks to a forehand error by the Dutchman, who seemed to run out of energy at the end.
Despite his recent injury, Alcaraz is one of the biggest title contenders alongside German professional Alexander Zverev, Serbian world number one Novak Djokovic and Australian Open winner Yannick Sinner from Italy.
