FC Bayern Munich: Eberl wants to make history with Kompany

A turbulent search for a new coach is coming to an end for FC Bayern. Vincent Kompany is expected to make the record champions shine again.

Before the official presentation of Vincent Kompany as head coach of FC Bayern, Munich’s sporting director Max Eberl is happy that the turbulent search for a coach is over. For the German record champions, Kompany is “an absolute asset and an exciting story that we now want to write,” said Eberl. The 38-year-old Belgian will present himself to the public as the new Bayern coach for the first time on May 30, 2024 in the Allianz Arena. “Everyone who comes into contact with him now will notice what a great person he is,” said Eberl.

Kompany moved from Premier League relegated club Burnley to the Munich club and signed a contract on Wednesday until June 30, 2027. His previous employer wished the former Bundesliga professional “only the best” for the job at Bayern. “After we were initially confident that we would be able to keep our coach, the changing dynamics of the situation made it impossible,” the English second division club said.

FC Bayern Munich pays transfer fee of more than ten million euros for Kompany

According to reports, FC Bayern is paying a transfer fee of ten to twelve million euros for Kompany. This brings an end to a sometimes chaotic search for a new head coach. First, preferred candidates Xabi Alonso, Julian Nagelsmann and Ralf Rangnick, among others, had turned down the offer. Then the attempt to reverse the termination of the contract with Thomas Tuchel, which had already been agreed in February, also failed.

There have recently been “very, very many, very, very long discussions with Kompany about the squad, about ideas, about the style of play,” said sporting director Eberl. A common spirit was quickly found. “The discussions were very pleasant,” said sporting director Christoph Freund. Kompany’s style of football suits FC Bayern very well.

For the new coach Kompany, the club is an institution

“I see FC Bayern as an institution. But what I’m most looking forward to are the simple things. Working with the players, working with the people in this building. Creating something that is described as a team. The very simple things. I don’t think you need to make it any more complicated. The rest will come naturally,” said Kompany.

This is the kind of football Kompany wants to play. The new coach will have the Munich team play “an offensive football, a dominant football, an intense football,” promises sports director Freund. Kompany himself says: “I grew up on the streets of Brussels, we love the ball, we are creative. I like players who are brave on the ball.”

What’s next for Bayern? A major shake-up of the squad is expected. After the first season without a title since 2012, Eberl and Freund are likely to rebuild the team and now also rely on Kompany’s advice. Bayern showed weaknesses in the defense in particular last season. “He can and will give our team an enormous amount,” said sports director Freund about the new hope Kompany.
Training for Bayern starts on July 15, one day after the European Championship final. In preparation for the new season, the Munich team is planning a trip to Asia, among other things.
