Champions League: Watzke: BVB can achieve “something extraordinary” against Real

Outsiders – so what?! BVB boss Hans-Joachim Watzke is really looking forward to the Champions League final. He believes that coach Edin Terzic’s team can achieve something extraordinary.

According to BVB boss Hans-Joachim Watzke, Borussia Dortmund will compete in the Champions League final in “one of the biggest games in the club’s long history”.

Because opponent Real Madrid is “the biggest and most successful club in the world – and the club with the greatest appeal, you have to say that without envy,” Watzke (64) told the “Bild” newspaper before the final on Saturday (9 p.m./ZDF and DAZN) in London.

The Spanish champions are the clear favorites, but Dortmund feel comfortable in this starting position. Coach Edin Terzic’s team can “always achieve something extraordinary in a game,” said Watzke. “BVB has it in its DNA that we usually do outstanding things against particularly strong opponents – especially internationally.”

Real, with star players Toni Kroos, Jude Bellingham and Vinícius Júnior, “undoubtedly has a great team,” said the chairman of the BVB management. But even before the two semi-final matches against Paris Saint-Germain (1-0/1-0), “nobody put a penny on us – and we won both,” said Watzke. “We can’t come out of this final as losers anyway, only as the really, really big winners.”
