According to a press release, Carmelo Ezpeleta, managing director of rights holder Dorna Sports, and Red Bull boss Mark Mateschitz have agreed to extend the contract by five years. In 2019, the cooperation was agreed until 2025. The 2024 World Championship races in MotoGP, Moto2 and Moto3 are scheduled for August 16 to 18.
“I am delighted that we have been able to secure this great event for the spectators at Spielberg in the long term with our commitment to Austria, especially to Styria,” said Mateschitz. Ezpeleta praised the organizer and the course: “We have one of the most beautiful race tracks in the world here. It offers the fans a fantastic racing weekend with excellent infrastructure, great entertainment and spectacular races.” Last year, more than 173,000 spectators attended the World Championship weekend.
This weekend, World Championship points will be up for grabs in Mugello, at the end of June in Assen, at the beginning of July at the Sachsenring and at the beginning of August in Silverstone. These four World Championship weekends are scheduled before the Austrian round. KTM will be hoping for a big coup at its home race, as the Upper Austrian factory is still winless in MotoGP this season. The Spanish young star Pedro Acosta is sixth in the World Championship standings, 72 points behind his leading compatriot Jorge Martin on Ducati. The South African Brad Binder is eighth (75).
