In future, the goals of the German national teams will be celebrated with the hit “Major Tom” by Peter Schilling. However, there will be a big exception in the coming weeks.
The 80s hit “Major Tom” has officially been chosen as the goal anthem of the German national football team. “Really cool. Outstanding. I’m delighted,” said national player Kai Havertz in a published Instagram video.
National player Alexandra Popp smiles into the camera and says: “How cool is that?!” Peter Schilling’s song has been a source of excitement among German fans in recent weeks.
The men’s team would play the song next week after scoring goals in the European Championship test matches on Monday in Nuremberg against Ukraine and on Friday in Mönchengladbach against Greece – but not at the European Championship in their own country. The European Football Union UEFA will determine the goal music for the tournament (14 June to 14 July). The women’s team will play in the European Championship qualifiers in Poland on 4 June.
The song was first played when a goal was scored in a friendly match in March against the Netherlands (2:1), when Maximilian Mittelstädt scored his first goal. In the chorus of the 1982 song, “the spaceship floats completely weightless” and “completely detached from the earth”.
