Sergio Pérez will drive for Red Bull in Formula 1 for another two years. The move comes as quite a surprise, as the Mexican has not always been convincing alongside world champion Max Verstappen.
Mexican Sergio Pérez will remain Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen’s teammate at Red Bull for two more years. The racing team announced the contract extension with the 34-year-old until the end of 2026. The previous contract with the current vice world champion would actually have expired at the end of the season.
Recently, there had been much speculation as to whether Pérez would be replaced by another driver from 2025 onwards, as he was too often not on a par with the Dutchman Verstappen. After eight of 24 races this season, Pérez is currently only in fifth place overall and is already 62 points behind leader Verstappen. Pérez has been driving for industry leader Red Bull since 2021. During this time, the veteran has taken five of his six Grand Prix victories.
“Continuity and stability are important for the team,” said team boss Christian Horner about the new contract ahead of the upcoming race on Sunday in Montreal, Canada. Pérez and Verstappen are characterized by a “successful and robust” collaboration, said Briton Horner. Verstappen is contractually bound to Red Bull until the end of 2028.
