Tennis: Paolini surprises with semi-final entry at French Open

The Italian festivities at the Grand Slam tournament on clay continue. After the new world number one Jannik Sinner, fellow countrywoman Jasmine Paolini also moves into the round of the best four.

The Italian Jasmine Paolini has celebrated the greatest success of her tennis career and has moved into the semi-finals of the French Open. The 28-year-old surprisingly won her quarter-final match in Paris against former Wimbledon champion Jelena Rybakina from Kazakhstan 6:2, 4:6, 6:4. The favorite Rybakina acted unusually hectically and made a total of 48 unforced errors.

“It’s an incredible feeling,” said Paolini after her first Grand Slam semifinal appearance. “I was too emotional in the second set, and I said to myself: she’s a great champion, this can happen. I kept fighting and came back.”

One day before the world number 15, her compatriot Jannik Sinner had already advanced to the men’s semifinals. The 22-year-old will also be the first Italian to take over the number one spot in the world rankings from next week, regardless of the outcome of his match on Friday against Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz.

After Francesca Schiavone, Sara Errani and Martina Trevisan, Paolini is the fourth Italian player to reach the round of the best four at a Grand Slam clay court tournament in the professional era. There she will face either Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka or 17-year-old Mirra Andreyeva from Russia. The last quarter-final is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.
