The regional government of Rio de Janeiro awarded Flamengo and Fluminense the management of the Maracaná Stadium until 2044according to a statement issued by the organization itself.
In this way, both teams will manage the facilities for the next twenty years. The two teams agreed that 65% of the investments will be made by the club chaired by Rodolfo Landim (Flamengo)while the rest will be disbursed by the green-red team.
In the tender to exploit Maracaná other consortiums also presented: one led by Vasco da Gama and the real estate company WTorre, and another led by the Arena 360 group, which manages the Mané Garrincha stadium in Brasilia.
For its part, the Fla-Flu company was awarded the tender with the commitment to invest nearly US$75.5 million in works with the aim of improving and maintaining the facilities during the twenty years that the concession will last.
The concession not only includes the Maracaná stadiumbut the complex also consists of a sports pavilion, known as Maracanãzinho, with capacity for 14,000 spectators and where basketball and volleyball matches are played.
Maracaná is considered one of the most important stadiums in the world. It was inaugurated in 1950 and began with a capacity for about 200,000 people., being the largest on the planet. This fell to 80,000 fans on the occasion of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

As for the clubs, Flamengo was the only one that surpassed the barrier of US$200 million in turnover the last two seasons: US$225 million in 2021-2022 and US$280 million in 2022-2023.
