Six years after her European title in Berlin, Gesa Krause is back on the European Championship podium. In Rome, she ran to silver after her maternity leave – until she belatedly received the golden message.
Gesa Felicitas Krause has belatedly won gold at the European Athletics Championships. The 31-year-old was initially only beaten by Alice Finot in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the first international championships after her maternity leave in Rome.
The Frenchwoman won in 9:16.22 minutes, a European best time of the year, ahead of Krause. However, because she had left the track, she was subsequently disqualified. The victory went to Krause after 9:18.06 minutes. Second place went to the British Elizabeth Bird (9:18.39).
After the titles in 2018 and 2016, Krause from Trier was able to celebrate again after her maternity leave. European Championship runner-up Lea Meyer (Leverkusen) and U23 European champion Olivia Gürth (Trier) were unable to compete for the medals. All three German runners have already achieved the Olympic standard.
