No statement before the Tour: Primoz Roglic trembles his way to overall victory at the Dauphiné. There is still work to be done before the Tour de France, which starts on June 29th.
Primoz Roglic of the German team Bora-hansgrohe has won the Critérium du Dauphiné for the second time, the dress rehearsal for the Tour de France.
The Slovenian encountered problems on the final stage to the Plateau des Glières, but sixth place was enough for victory. In the end, Roglic relegated the American Matteo Jorgensen to second place with an eight-second lead.
The 34-year-old had won the two previous mountain finishes, but on the last section of the eight-day tour, his strength failed him around five kilometers before the plateau. The Spaniard Carlos Rodriguez secured the stage victory ahead of Jorgensen and the Canadian Derek Gee, who also came third in the overall ranking.
“For me, it’s a bit crazy to win the Dauphiné, given everything that had happened before,” said Roglic after his second overall victory in the race after 2022. He had always kept an eye on the time gap to Jorgensen. “I’ve definitely suffered in the last three days. There’s still work to be done. The Dauphiné is one thing, the Tour is another. You don’t win every day. That’s why I want to enjoy the moment.”
Evenepoel with weaknesses on the mountain
Roglic had a serious fall in the Tour of the Basque Country in April. Defending Tour champion Jonas Vingegaard and second-ride world champion Remco Evenepoel were also involved in the fall. While Vingegaard has not raced since then and is still uncertain about taking part in the Tour, Evenepoel finished seventh in the Dauphiné. Although the Belgian won the individual time trial, he lost time on the mountain stages.
Thanks to the triumph, Roglic is considered the top favorite for overall victory in the Tour alongside fellow countryman Tadej Pogacar. Pogacar won the Giro d’Italia in May and wants to be the first professional since Marco Pantani in 1998 to achieve the double.
