Tennis: Alcaraz and the hunt for the Grand Slam record

At 21 years old, the Spanish tennis star is already setting records. He wants to get a special tattoo for his triumph in the final at the French Open against Alexander Zverev.

French Open champion Carlos Alcaraz presented himself at the site of his great triumph in a dark suit and with the Coupe des Mousquetaires in his hands. The young Spaniard smiled for the photographers on Monday in the stands of the Roland Garros tennis stadium. At the age of just 21 years and one month, Alcaraz won his third title in the third Grand Slam final with a 6:3, 2:6, 5:7, 6:1, 6:2 win against the German tennis star Alexander Zverev.

When asked if he could break Serbian Novak Djokovic’s record of 24 Grand Slam tournament victories in the future, Alcaraz replied with a grin: “I don’t know. I hope so.”

But in the two weeks at the Stade Roland Garros he experienced again how difficult it is to achieve such a triumph at one of the four most important tennis tournaments. “And Djoko has 24 of them – that’s unbelievable.” He doesn’t want to look at the exact number until the end of his career, “at the moment I’m enjoying this third title.”

Marca: “Alcaraz the new king of Roland Garros”

Also because it had been his childhood dream to win the French Open just like his role model Rafael Nadal. “When school was over, I ran home, turned on the TV and watched the matches.”

Alcaraz has now stepped out of the shadow of the clay court king Nadal. The Spanish press in particular was full of praise for the exceptional talent. “Carlos Alcaraz survives an epic final and crowns himself the new king of Roland Garros,” wrote “Marca”.

The victory in Paris probably makes him “most proud” because he had to fight the hardest for it due to his elbow injury before the start of the tournament. The reward has already been decided: a tattoo on his left ankle, “with the Eiffel Tower and today’s date,” as Alcaraz revealed after his final victory on Sunday.

The 21-year-old is the youngest tennis professional to win a Grand Slam title on all three surfaces: clay, grass and hard court. He had previously won the trophy at the 2022 US Open and at Wimbledon in 2023. Although he grew up on clay courts, he also felt comfortable on hard courts at an early age, the all-rounder explained. His aggressive game is also “pretty good for grass.”
