The Russian Ice Hockey Federation (FHR) on Thursday, December 30, regrets the cancellation of the World Youth Championship in Canada, but shares the organizers’ concern for the health of the athletes.
“After three canceled matches at the youth world championship, the International Ice Hockey Federation has decided to cancel the tournament, which was held in Edmonton and Red Deer, Canada. FHR regrets what happened, but shares the organizers’ concern for the health of the participants and the observance of the sports principle, ”the message says.
Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Physical Culture and Sports Dmitry Svishchev called the cancellation of the tournament bad news, especially on the eve of the Olympic Games.
“This is one of the most important events in the life of our children. But the health of our athletes is the most important thing. I call on the FMBA and the Russian Ice Hockey Federation to concentrate as much as possible so that all our athletes return home without complications and receive medical assistance, ”TASS quoted him as saying.
Svishchev also expressed the opinion that the reason for the cancellation of the championship was the poor work of the organizers.
“Everything that happened was the fault of the organizers of the competition. They are obliged to ensure the safety of athletes in today’s environment. We know how everything will be organized at the Games in China. No one is allowed into hotels, communication from outside is minimized. Here, such conditions were not provided, it is the responsibility of the organizers themselves, ”the parliamentarian concluded.
The decision to cancel the IIHF World Youth Championship was made on December 30 after a series of positive tests for coronavirus in the national teams. In recent days, three meetings have been canceled between teams from the USA and Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Finland, Russia and Slovakia.
The World Championship was held in Canada in the cities of Edmonton and Red Deer and was supposed to end on the night of January 6. The current winner is the USA national team.
The Russian national team played in group B with teams from Sweden, USA, Slovakia, Switzerland. In the first round, Sergei Zubov’s team lost to the Swedes (3: 6), in the second, they beat the Swiss (4: 2).
