The cancellation of the World Youth Hockey Championship (MHM) is a violation of sporting principles, said two-time Olympic ice hockey champion Valery Kamensky. On December 29, he told about this to the Sport-Express newspaper.
“I think there was a meeting before the start of the championship, where everyone voted for such a procedure. Yes, in this case, the sporting principle is violated. Of course, I would like everyone to play with each other, the winner was revealed on the court. If the situation deteriorates, then I think the World Cup will be canceled, “said Kamensky.
Earlier, due to positive tests for coronavirus, three national teams received a technical defeat for failed matches. Among them – the Czech team in the canceled match against Finland and the US team in the match against Switzerland.
On December 29, due to a positive test from the forward of the Russian national team Matvey Michkov, the Russians were credited with a forfeit defeat in the canceled match against Slovakia. Honored hockey coach of Russia Vladimir Plyushchev criticized this decision, noting that the organizers had to calculate all the options for the development of events at the tournament.
On December 30, the Council of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) canceled the MHM, stressing that the health of the players is a priority. Federation President Luc Tardiff noted that the organization has adjusted the tournament protocols to introduce daily testing and a requirement to quarantine the team upon confirmation of positive cases, but that was not enough.
