After eight of ten disciplines, the European Championship medals are probably too far away for the German decathletes. Defending champion Kaul is at least improving, and Eitel remains the best German.
For Niklas Kaul, a top place in the European Decathlon in Rome is hardly attainable, despite a personal best in the discus throw. The European champion from Munich 2022 is in seventh place after the eighth discipline – the pole vault – with 6747 points. After a technically unclean hurdle race, Kaul was at least the best of the entire field in the discus throw with 49.89 meters.
The best German overall is Manuel Eitel in sixth place with 6837 points. Felix Wolter in eighth place has exactly one point less than Kaul. Tim Nowak is 15th with 6567 points. The javelin throw – a strong discipline for Kaul – and the 1500-meter run follow on Tuesday evening. The defending champion from Mainz had already predicted on Monday evening that it would be close to winning a medal.
Johannes Erm from Estonia is in the lead with 7207 points, ahead of the Frenchman Makenson Gletty with 7146 points, and the Norwegian Markus Rooth is in third place with 7096 points. Gletty was allowed to repeat his hurdle race and was even the fastest. In his first attempt, he started well after the other decathletes, who had obviously heard the starting shot better, and then successfully complained to the judges.
