Two years after his decathlon triumph in Munich, Niklas Kaul remains without a medal at the European Championships. The deficit is too big for the defending champion on the second day.
Defending champion Niklas Kaul finished fourth in the decathlon at the European Athletics Championships in Rome. After his acclaimed comeback to win gold at the 2022 European Championships in Munich, the Mainz native was unable to fully make up the deficit to the medal places on the second day.
Two months before the Olympic Games in Paris, former world champion Kaul collected 8547 points in his first complete decathlon of the year. In the javelin throw – the penultimate discipline – the 26-year-old shone once again with 75.45 meters and was number one there, as he had been in the discus throw.
The title went to Johannes Erm from Estonia with 8764 points, ahead of Sander Skotheim from Norway with 8635 points and Makenson Gletty from France with 8606 points. The second best German after Kaul was Manuel Eitel in seventh place (8212), Tim Nowak (8150) was ninth, Felix Wolter (8051) came in 13th.
The number one German decathlete and a contender for Olympic gold is Leo Neugebauer. Neugebauer, who is studying in the USA, raised his German record to 8,961 points at the college championships immediately before the European Championships.
