Golf: US Open: Kaymer’s return to Pinehurst No.2

The 124th US Open is a showdown between the best golfers in the world. Martin Kaymer is also back in Pinehurst. The 39-year-old is returning to a very special place for him.

Tiger Woods is here, and of course top favorite Scottie Scheffler is there too: The best golfers in the world will be playing for the title of the 124th US Open in Pinehurst starting this Thursday. Martin Kaymer will also be there. For the 39-year-old, it is a return to a place that is very special to him.

A look at the main protagonists at the third major tournament of the season at the Pinehurst Resort and Country Club in the US state of North Carolina:

Martin Kaymer

The now 39-year-old LIV professional celebrated one of his greatest successes on the Pinehurst No.2 golf course. Ten years ago, Kaymer was the only German golfer to win the US Open there. In his victory in 2014, the Mettmann native outclassed the competition: with an eight-stroke lead, he secured his second major title in outstanding fashion. However, the US Open triumph was to be Kaymer’s last individual title to date. In 2022, the Rhinelander joined the controversial LIV tour, which is financed by Saudi Arabia. Last weekend, the former world number one celebrated a success after a long time: Together with the “Cleeks”, Kaymer won the team ranking at the tournament in Houston.

Scottie Scheffler

The world number one is the big favorite for the US Open title. The 27-year-old American is currently dominating the golf scene. This season, Scheffler has already won five tournaments on the PGA Tour – including the prestigious Masters in Augusta for the second time. Just last Sunday, he won the dress rehearsal in Dublin, Ohio. In his 13 starts so far this season, Scheffler has already collected over 24 million US dollars in prize money.

Tiger Woods

No matter what physical condition the now 48-year-old Californian is in, he is and remains the crowd favorite. In Pinehurst, too, everything will revolve around the charismatic 15-time major winner. However, the man who was the number one in the golf world for 683 weeks is not one of the favorites after his numerous injuries. Woods broke his right leg several times in a serious car accident in February 2021. Since then, the superstar has only competed in a few select tournaments.

Stephan Jaeger

Alongside Kaymer, the 35-year-old from Munich is the second German participant in the US Open. The German, who lives in the USA, is having a strong season on the PGA Tour. At the beginning of April, Jäger celebrated his first victory on the US Tour in Houston. In Pinehurst, the world number 44 has an outside chance.

The space

The 124th US Open will once again be played on the traditional Pinehurst No.2. The course was opened in 1907 and was designed by Donald Ross. At the US Open, the par-70 course is almost 7,000 meters long. The undulating and fast greens in particular will be a challenge for the players. The Pinehurst Resort and Country Club is located around 150 kilometers east of the city of Charlotte in the US state of North Carolina.
