Tennis pro Dominik Koepfer has an exciting round of 16 match with Lorenzo Musetti at the grass court tournament in Stuttgart. He is two points away from victory.
Davis Cup player Dominik Koepfer missed the quarterfinals at the grass tennis tournament in Stuttgart. The 30-year-old lost to fifth-seeded Italian Lorenzo Musetti in three sets, 7:6 (11:9), 6:7 (5:7), 3:6.
In an exciting and entertaining round of 16, the world number 65 nevertheless impressed against the favored Italian both with his play and with his fast legs. Koepfer also kept his nerve when the first set could have gone to Musetti with a total of five chances. In the second tiebreak, Koepfer was only two points away from victory and thus from reaching his first ATP quarterfinal on grass.
After two sets without losing serve, there were three breaks in the decisive round. Koepfer immediately made up for a 1:3, but then lost his serve again to make it 3:5. “Bitter,” commented the Black Forest native, still dissatisfied on the court. “Stupidly broken and then it just wasn’t enough.”
At the event at the Weissenhof, the tennis pros are preparing for Wimbledon (July 1st – 14th). Yannick Hanfmann, whose match against the American defending champion Frances Tiafoe was scheduled to follow, and Jan-Lennard Struff also made it to the round of 16. Last year’s finalist Struff will not be back until Thursday. The German number one Alexander Zverev canceled his participation in the tournament with prize money of 812,235 euros after losing the French Open final.
