The German men’s 4×400-meter relay team surprised everyone with a medal at the European Championships. 800-meter runner Kolberg finished fifth.
The German men’s 4×400-meter relay team won the bronze medal at the European Athletics Championships in Rome, narrowly missing out on silver.
Manuel Sanders, the individual seventh-place Jean Paul Bredau, Marc Koch and hurdle specialist Emil Agyekum were only one hundredth of a second slower than Italy in 3:00.82 minutes. The victory went to the Belgian selection in 2:59.84 minutes.
The German women’s relay team with Skadi Schier, Alica Schmidt, Luna Bulmahn and Eileen Demes came in eighth place in 3:27.11 minutes, while the Dutch team won with European hurdles champion Femke Bol in 3:22.39 minutes. After their European Championship appearance, the DLV quartet can hope to make it to the Olympic Games in Paris like the other German relay teams that have already qualified.
800-meter runner Majtie Kolberg took a good fifth place. The 24-year-old from LG Kreis Ahrweiler crossed the finish line after 1:59.87 minutes, which was not quite enough for a surprise medal. British defending champion Keely Hodgkinson won in 1:58.65 minutes.
