Javelin thrower Julian Weber has been on course to defend his title at the European Championships for a long time. In the last attempt, his Czech rival overtakes him.
Javelin thrower Julian Weber missed out on his second European championship title after 2022, but at least won the silver medal. Two years after his triumph in Munich, the 29-year-old from Mainz had to admit defeat in Rome to the Czech Jakub Vadlejch, who overtook him with 88.65 meters in the last attempt.
The Olympic and World Championship runner-up, who was beaten by Weber at the previous European Championships, celebrated his first international title. Weber was in the lead for a long time on Wednesday in the Olympic Stadium with 85.94 meters after the first attempt and was ultimately unable to counter. Bronze went to the Finn Oliver Helander with 85.75 meters. 19-year-old Max Dehning from Leverkusen came twelfth and last with 76.16 meters.
In the qualification, after two less than good throws, Weber managed the greatest distance of 85.01 meters and ultimately secured his place in the final. As promised, he went full throttle on his first attempt and hurled the javelin almost 86 meters. His expected biggest competitor, Vadlejch, came within a good meter of him in his third attempt. Helander then even came within 19 centimeters of the lead. Vadlejch managed the winning throw at the end.
