In December 2020, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed the inclusion of this type of urban dance, break dancingin the list of Olympic disciplines.
“It’s official; breaking will be in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games for the first time in history,” announced the organization chaired by Thomas Bach on their social networks four years ago.
Although it is the first time in history that break dancing competes in some Olympic Games, this made his debut at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, in 2018.

On this occasion, sixteen b-boys (sports dancers) and b-girls (sports dancers) will make up the competitive table, in which they will face one against one “dancing to random music that they do not know in advance played by a DJ,” explains the organization of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in a statement. The test will be held in Plaza de La Concordia, one of the venues where the skateboarding, 3×3 basketball or BMX freestyle tests will also be held.
Traditionally, breaking competitions use a scoring system called Trivium. This takes into account three factors: soul, or interpretive quality; body or physical quality, and mind or artistic quality. However, in Paris 2024, The system will be from the World DanceSport Federation (Wdsf)which will take into account five factors: musicality, vocabulary, originality, technique and execution.
At the French Olympic event, break dancing will take over from skateboarding, surfing, sport climbing or karate as a new Olympic modality. These last four debuted at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, finally held in 2021 due to the pandemic caused by Covid-19.
Likewise, the entity chaired by Thomas Bach decided to organize cycling events, BMX freestyle and 3×3 basketball, in its line of approaching the younger public, who seems to have lost interest in the main sporting event on the entire planet.
More disciplines in 2028
The introduction of new sports disciplines will not end in Paris 2024, but rather the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games will welcome sports such as lacrosse, cricket, baseball or softball, squash and flag football.
“The entry of these new sports among the Olympic disciplines aims to innovate and exert the greatest possible impact, show sports consolidated in the culture of each country and introduce other sports internationally relevant,” explained John Harper, operations director of the Olympic Games Organizing Committee.
