Mats Hummels reacts to Terzic separation and is himself on the verge of being fired

In the days before the departure of Edin Terzic, there was speculation about whether the coach had problems with some of Borussia Dortmund’s players. Mats Hummels is one of them. The central defender made cryptic comments about the situation at BVB.

It was not a complete surprise but it was still a bombshell that came across the news agencies on Thursday afternoon: Edin Terzic has asked Borussia Dortmund to terminate his contract, and the club complied with the coach’s request. Terzic had led BVB to the Champions League final, but Dortmund’s performances in the league and the cup were disappointing.

In recent weeks, there had been speculation that the coach did not have the greatest support in the dressing room. At the beginning of the week, “Bild” reported that there had been an argument between Terzic and Mats Hummels before the final in Wembley, and that his relationship with club legend Marco Reus was also not the best. Immediately before the final in London at the end of May, Hummels gave an explosive interview to “Sport Bild” in which he questioned the coach’s tactics, among other things. On the evening after the separation from Terzic, the 35-year-old made a cryptic statement on Instagram. “Summarizing today will be a challenge for me too,” wrote Dortmund’s defense chief in a story accompanying a picture showing him with a surprised expression on his face.

Mats Hummels: An interview as a reason for separation

Despite the split from Terzic, there seems to be no future for the 2014 world champion in Dortmund. Hummels’ contract expires at the end of June, and according to consistent media reports, BVB does not seem willing to extend the contract. The reason for this is said to be the interview with “Sport Bild”, which was not well received by the management, not least because of the timing. This means that after 13 years with two championship titles and two cup wins, Hummels will also have to look for a new employer.

In the search for a successor for Edin Terzic, Borussia Dortmund seems to have found one within its own ranks. The “Sportschau” newspaper, among others, reports that Nuri Sahin will be on the sidelines in the future. The 35-year-old played for BVB from 2001 to 2011 and from 2013 to 2018 and returned to Dortmund last winter after his active career. Together with Sven Bender, he was appointed as Edin Terzic’s assistant. Even then, this process was seen by the BVB management as a kind of vote of no confidence in Terzic.
