Nuri Sahin new coach of Borussia Dortmund after Terzic’s departure

Nuri Sahin new coach of Borussia Dortmund after Terzic’s departure

That was quick: One day after coach Edin Terzic resigned, BVB presented a successor. Nuri Sahin enjoys a good reputation in Dortmund. He still has to prove himself as a coach.

Nuri Sahin is the new coach of Borussia Dortmund. The 35-year-old will succeed Edin Terzic, as the Bundesliga football club from the Ruhr region announced on Friday. The former BVB professional Sahin has been given a contract with Dortmund until June 30, 2027. “It is a great honor for me to be the coach of Borussia Dortmund. I would like to thank everyone in charge at the club for the trust they have placed in me,” said Sahin, according to a club statement. “I am very much looking forward to my job at BVB. From day one, we will do everything we can with a lot of energy and great passion to achieve the maximum possible success.”

Sahin played more than 200 games for BVB as a player. As a coach, he has little experience on the bench – just like his predecessor Terzic when he took office. Sahin is expected to initiate a change and lead the Champions League finalists back to success in the Bundesliga.

Nuri Sahin with coaching experience at Antalyaspor

The search for a successor for Terzic, who asked the fifth-placed team on Thursday to immediately terminate his contract, which runs until 2025, was much easier for the club bosses than it was for FC Bayern to find a new coach. After all, Sahin has been considered a shadow coach since his return to Dortmund last January and has never made a secret of his ambitions to work as head coach at BVB at some point. However, it was not planned that the wish of Terzic’s previous assistant would come true so quickly.

Like his predecessor, who was born in Menden, the Lüdenscheid native comes from near Dortmund. He enjoys a good reputation in the Ruhr city. Sahin gained his first experience as a coach in the professional sector from 2021 to 2023 at the Turkish first division club Antalyaspor.

Together with the new sporting director Lars Ricken, sporting director Sebastian Kehl and squad planner Sven Mislintat, the 52-time Turkish international, who played for BVB, Real Madrid, Liverpool FC, Werder Bremen and Antalyaspor in his professional career, is to carry out a squad restructuring. The aim is a return to Borussia’s original DNA with more attractive attacking football. In addition to many other planned new signings, Stuttgart striker Serhou Guirassy, with whom BVB is reportedly in promising negotiations, could also contribute to this.

“He has worked hard over the past few years to prepare for a coaching career, will take on his new role with great dedication and will continue to develop our team,” said Ricken. “As former teammates, we will work together with trust and ambition. Nuri knows the club, its employees and the BVB DNA both as a player and as an assistant coach. We are convinced that Nuri is the right coach for us.”
