European Football Championship: Munich fan zone full: Police block access to the Olympic Park

In Munich, the police close a fan zone – too many people wanted to watch the Germany match in the Olympic Park. A measure pays off.

Due to the large number of football fans before the European Championship opening match in Munich, the police cordoned off the fan zone at the Olympic Stadium. “The fan zone is closed. Please do not drive to the Olympic Park at the moment!” wrote the police and the city of Munich on X three hours before kick-off.

The fan zone in the Olympic Park has space for around 30,000 people. “Despite the well-filled fan zone, the mood among the visitors is great,” the police announced a short time later. The officers from the emergency unit were also infected by this feeling.

In the afternoon, the police had already stopped allowing people onto Marienplatz. For a short time, subways were also unable to stop there. However, the interruption reportedly “provided relief” so that fans could once again take the subway from Marienplatz to the arena in Fröttmaning and to the Olympic Park.

Police and city administration asked fans and passers-by to move to other areas of the city because of the closure. The Munich city administration had pointed out that the public viewing of the opening match between Germany and Scotland in the evening was not planned at the town hall, but in the fan zone in the Olympic Park.
