Russian grandmaster Ian Nepomniachtchi lost to Norwegian Magnus Carlsen in the 20th round of the World Blitz Championship. This was announced on Thursday, December 30, by Sport-Express.
Carlsen played with white pieces. It is noted that the tournament, taking place in Warsaw, will end later on Thursday.
Carlsen defeated Nepomniachtchi in the 11th game of the match for the world chess crown on December 10 and defended his world title ahead of schedule in Dubai.
As a result of 11 games, Carlsen won the match with a score of 7.5: 3.5 with black pieces.
The prize fund for the title of world champion is € 2 million. Carlsen will receive € 1.2 million, Nepomniachtchi – € 800 thousand.
Carlsen, 31, is ranked first in the FIDE ranking. He has held the title of world champion since 2013, when he beat the representative of India, Viswanathan Anand.
Nepomniachtchi is 31 years old, in the FIDE rating he is on the fifth line. The Russian became the European champion in 2010, won the World Team Championship twice (2013, 2019) as part of the Russian national team, and won the Candidates Tournament in 2021.
