For the Dakar Rally participants there is another challenge off the track at the 44th edition: the corona pandemic is building up like an unpredictable dune before the start on Sunday. In the Dakar convoy – around a thousand people belong to the “bubble” – there have already been more than 30 positive corona tests. One of them comes from MotoGP rider Danilo Petrucci, who wanted to contest the Dakar for the first time after his road career with the KTM team.
The Italian, who received the “booster” vaccination on December 17th, gave a positive test on Tuesday – his carefully prepared Dakar adventure should be over. The KTM team was very nervous yesterday, because Petrucci has often sought out Matthias Walkner’s in Jeddah in the past few days to get in-depth tips. The Tuesday test of the Salzburg man was negative, further tests will now be a tremendous game – like for all other people in the Dakar bubble.
