Before the European Championship, Manuel Neuer made a mistake and discussions about the number one became louder. But the DFB goalkeeper was unmoved. After the victory against Scotland, he warned against Hungary.
Manuel Neuer does not want to be blinded by the furious start to the European Championship by the German national football team and expects a much more difficult task against Hungary. “This is a very unpleasant team that tries to be aggressive in the tackles,” said the goalkeeper. The opponent should not be underestimated under any circumstances: “Hungary will be a completely different story.” The DFB eleven will face Hungary in Stuttgart on Wednesday (6 p.m./ARD and MagentaTV).
The 5:1 win against Scotland in the opening match gives us hope for a good tournament – judging from Neuer’s experience of eight major tournaments. “We started well against Portugal in 2014, but we weren’t completely dominant,” said the former world champion. “Against Scotland we were dominant from the start. But on the pitch everyone was annoyed about the own goal. That’s a good sign. We’re grounded.”
Neuer is not impressed by the discussions surrounding him. “I looked at it from the outside, I didn’t read anything,” said the 38-year-old. In the last two test matches before the tournament, Neuer did not appear to be entirely confident, and was responsible for conceding a goal in the 2-1 win against Greece.
Neuer did not want to let an emerging debate get to him. “I went into the analysis with those responsible,” said the Bayern professional. “We assessed the images as they are. The trust between the coaching team and me is very high.”
