During 2021, Álvarez celebrated three titles with River (Professional League, Argentine Super Cup and Champions Trophy) and one with Argentina (America’s Cup), in addition to showing an explosion of his game that left him with a near future in European football.

The other Argentine players listed in the ballot, with one vote, were Ignacio Fernández and Matías Zaracho from Atlético Mineiro from Brazil and Enzo Pérez from River Plate.

The third place was occupied by the Paraguayan defender Gustavo Gomez (30 votes), of the two-time champion of America Palmeiras.

Further back the Brazilians were ordered Hulk (27), the Uruguayan Georgian De Arrascaeta (12 and Raphael Veiga (11), Weverton (9), Bruno Henrique (7) and rony (4), all from Brazil.

Also a vote was added by the Uruguayan Jonathan Rodríguez, the Brazilians Dudu and Everton Ribeiro; the bolivian Marcelo Moreno Martins, the Chilean Angel Mena and the colombian Camilo Vargas.

The newspaper El País has awarded the King of America Award every year since 1986 through the vote of some 200 journalists from the region.

Throughout its history it was awarded by the Argentines Oscar Ruggeri (1991), Martín Palermo (1998), Javier Saviola (1999), Juan Román Riquelme (2001), Carlos Tevez (2003, 2004 and 2005), Juan Sebastián Verón ( 2008 and 2009), Andrés D’Alessandro (2010) and Gonzalo “Pity” Martínez (2018).
