After Per Mertesacker was reprimanded by moderator Jochen Breyer for his “player material” comment, the discussion has not died down the next day. Now the moderator himself has spoken out – and rejected a ban on speaking on ZDF.
“Guys,” said moderator Joachen Breyer on the “X” platform (formerly Twitter) on Friday afternoon. “Nobody has forbidden anyone from doing anything. I have just passed on the critical feedback that often comes with the term to our group,” he clarified. And: “We talk as openly in front of the camera as we do behind the camera, that is our principle.”
Per Mertesacker uses the word “player material” – and is asked for an alternative
The statement is a reaction to the debate that has been raging on social media since Friday evening. After ex-professional and TV expert Per Mertesacker spoke in his pre-match analysis of the Italy vs. Spain match about the changed style of the Spaniards, “because they no longer have the players to just play for possession,” moderator Breyer intervened and pointed out that the term “players” was viewed critically by some viewers. In the future, other words could be used, he suggested.
This was followed by a debate about whether there would now be a ban on speaking on ZDF.
So far, however, it has not been revealed that Per Mertesacker feels restricted in his work. As long as that remains the case, everyone can, with a clear conscience, concentrate on what is important again: the European Football Championship.
