Will Red Bull’s dominance continue in Barcelona? Max Verstappen missed the best time at the start. A McLaren is right at the front.
World champion Max Verstappen narrowly missed the best time in the opening Formula 1 practice session in Barcelona. The three-time world champion finished second in the first one-hour session, just 0.024 seconds behind leader Lando Norris. The McLaren driver set the fastest lap on the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in 1:14.228 minutes. Local hero Carlos Sainz in a Ferrari came third (+0.344 seconds).
The only German driver in the field, Nico Hülkenberg, was initially a spectator. The young British driver Oliver Bearman was allowed to drive his Haas and finished second to last. The Formula 1 teams are obliged to give young drivers training time.
Verstappen clearly leads the World Championship
The opening practice session had to be briefly interrupted with a red flag because a wing part of Fernando Alonso’s Aston Martin remained on the asphalt around 22 minutes before the end of the session.
This weekend, Formula 1 will contest the 1111th Grand Prix in its history. Verstappen leads the World Championship after six victories in the first new races. He already has 56 points more than second-placed Charles Leclerc of Ferrari. Verstappen is aiming for his third consecutive victory in Spain this Sunday (3 p.m./Sky).
