The Dutch coach cannot understand why Simons’ goal against France was disallowed. He also criticises something else.
National coach Ronald Koeman has no understanding for the VAR decision in the 0:0 European Championship group match between the Netherlands and France. A goal by RB Leipzig professional Xavi Simons in the 69th minute was disallowed by the video referee.
Teammate Denzel Dumfries is said to have obstructed France’s goalkeeper Mike Maignan in an offside position. He was standing next to the goalkeeper when the football went into the goal. “Personally, I think the goal should have counted,” said Koeman.
“Dumfries’ position is offside, that’s true, but he’s not bothering the goalkeeper. Therefore, it’s legal,” said the former international player, who was also annoyed that the decision had taken so long. “You need five minutes to check that, I don’t understand that. Once again: he’s not bothering the goalkeeper.”
Deschamps: “It was immediately clear to me”
He also spoke to the referee, who said it was offside. “I saw the scene and since then I have had my opinion on it, but that remains in the dressing room,” stressed Koeman. Fellow coach Didier Deschamps, however, thought the decision was correct; it was obvious, he stressed. “It was immediately clear to me, but I don’t know why it’s taking so long,” said the French coach.
“A sensational victory seemed within reach for a moment in Leipzig,” wrote the Dutch newspaper “AD”: “Xavi Simons was already running towards the raging orange crowd behind the goal, full of joy, in his own stadium of all places. But the goal was not recognised by the VAR after a minute-long check.”
