McLaren’s Formula 1 motorhome has to be evacuated after a fire. Before qualifying, Carlos Sainz sets the fastest lap in his Ferrari.
After excitement in the Formula 1 paddock in Barcelona because of a fire alarm, Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz raced to the best time in the final training session. After McLaren’s motorhome had to be evacuated due to heavy smoke, the Spaniard relegated McLaren driver Lando Norris (+0.030 seconds) to second place with a time of 1:13.013 minutes.
Third in a very close final practice session before qualifying was Sainz’s teammate Charles Leclerc (+0.037 seconds).
World champion Max Verstappen (+0.074 seconds) finished Saturday’s session in fourth place in the Red Bull. The only German regular driver in the field, Nico Hülkenberg, finished 13th in his Haas.
Before the start of the final practice session, McLaren announced that the team’s premises had been “evacuated due to a fire alarm” that morning. “The team was safely evacuated while the local fire brigade dealt with the problem.” The racing team did not provide any further details. Eyewitnesses initially reported heavy smoke and a pungent smell.
The area around the motorhome, where team members, guests and drivers are usually entertained, was initially cordoned off. Firefighters, police and paramedics were deployed.
