Niclas Füllkrug was the “match winner” with his goal to make it 1:1

Germany won the group at the European Football Championship thanks to a late goal against Switzerland. Substitute Niclas Füllkrug managed to equalize with a header in the 92nd minute in the host’s 1:1 (0:1) draw against the “Nati” on Sunday evening. Dan Ndoye put the Swiss ahead in Frankfurt in the 28th minute. Both teams remained unbeaten in the first phase of the tournament and are in the round of 16.

There, the Germans will face the second-placed team in Group C, which includes England and Denmark. Switzerland will face the second-placed team in the often-quoted “group of death,” Spain. Since the Iberians are already firmly in first place, Italy, Croatia and Albania are still possible opponents.

The highlights of the game:

New overtaken Buffon

Julian Nagelsmann stayed true to himself before the game. The national coach fielded exactly the same starting eleven that had started in the victories against Scotland and Hungary. He wanted to end the first phase of the tournament with another win as a signal to the competition in order to stay in the “flow”. Manuel Neuer played in a European Championship for the 18th time and snatched the record previously held by Italy’s legend Gianluigi Buffon in the goalkeeper rankings. In the general rankings, Cristiano Ronaldo is ahead with 25 European Championship matches.

For Switzerland, Murat Yakin made changes to the attack. Breel Embolo replaced Xherdan Shaqiri, Fabian Rieder started instead of Ruben Vargas. Defender Fabian Schär played without a mask after breaking his nose – and had a lot of work ahead of him. Germany started with verve and a very variable midfield line with Jamal Musiala, Ilkay Gündogan and Florian Wirtz.

Andrich’s goal disallowed

The Swiss were solid defensively, and after just over a quarter of an hour the ball finally hit their goal. Yann Sommer did not look good when Robert Andrich shot from a distance. However, the goal was rightly disallowed after a VAR check, as Musiala had just hit his opponent Michel Aebischer on the foot. Sommer and his Swiss team were able to breathe a sigh of relief – and ten minutes later they struck with their first shot on goal. Musiala got bogged down in the dribbling, and Ndoye volleyed the resulting counterattack after Freuler’s cross.

It was the first goal for the FC Bologna striker in the national jersey. A second goal followed almost immediately, but Ndoye’s low shot went just wide of the goal. The 23-year-old caused further excitement when he went in against Maximilian Mittelstädt, who had already been cautioned. Nagelsmann demanded a yellow card, but the Italian referee Daniele Orsato waved it off. Jonathan Tah was later given a yellow card. The German central defender will therefore miss the round of 16 after his second caution in the tournament. The Swiss, with their strategists Manuel Akanji and Granit Xhaka, continued to allow little. Antonio Rüdiger’s header from a corner (41′) went well wide, and then the first half was over.
