Yoga: How to introduce children – and what they can learn from it

Jump like a frog or roar like a gorilla: Children’s yoga teaches asanas, breathing exercises and meditation in a playful way. It offers similar benefits to those for adults – but also has its limits.

Ms. Schöppel, when you think of yoga you primarily think of peace and relaxation – for children that sounds rather boring. How do you get children to get involved in yoga anyway?
If the children participate “voluntarily”, things are of course different than if I, for example, come to a school class as part of compulsory lessons. Rules and rituals are very important. They form a line, briefly introduce themselves with their names and are then allowed to enter the “yoga oasis”. This way they can calm down before the session. If we recognize noticeably active children in advance, we bring them to us and give them a special task – in this way we make them our “yoga assistants”.

However, you have to use them beforehand, and not just when they have already caused a disturbance, otherwise the other children won’t understand. You have to approach the matter carefully, both pedagogically and didactically. If there are a lot of energetic children, they can first let off steam with games and exercises in a safe environment. Yoga is never about keeping children quiet, but about supporting them in their need for movement. Once they have moved enough, they are very happy to relax.
